We are vacationing on Kiawah, our kids wanted Mexican food, and we knew the place at Fresh Fields had watery drinks and not great food. This place has a full bar as of April 2024. Service and food were excellent. My 6 year old had the chicken empanadas which were the best I’ve ever had, my chicken mole was yummy and quite spicy, they made a simple chicken and rice for our son, and my husband had a delicious fish burrito. House salsa was spicy and great. We had large house margaritas which were a little overpriced but appreciated. Entrees run about $11-$16. Melon agua Fresca was

As a native Texan I grew up on authentic Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine. El Rincon brings me back to my Texas roots with a menu of fresh, homemade Mexican dishes that put the local chain Mexican joint to shame. Let's start with the homemade chips and fresh salsa - not jar salsa too often served by other Mexican restaurants. The salsa had a great medium heat and was perfect with the still warm chips. The menu, while simple, is well executed across the board. We all ordered different dishes and each was excellently prepared. Delicious chicken mole, tacos, and carne asada quesadilla prepared with homemade tortillas (there's nothing better) flavorful beef chunks and gooey melted cheese. We finished with crisp, cinnamon covered churros. The restaurant recently acquired their liquor license so we were able to enjoy our meals with cold Modelos and tequila sodas - a huge plus for most Mexican diners. The owner, Idalis, is delightful and deserves the island's support. We desperately need another locally owned, authentic, ethnic restaurant and they've shown me that they deserve our patronage. Although we own a restaurant just a mile away, we'll be having dinner with Idalis and her lovely staff every Tuesday night when we're closed and invite y'all to join us and help El Rincon thrive.

El Rincon was empty. On a Saturday night. I think it was because of the lack of beer or wine. The food was really good, and they seemed to have a decent take-out business, but we were literally the only people in the restaurant. The place was very clean, the servers were very nice, and the decor was festive. I liked my el pastor burrito a lot. it came with a nice salad, and mediocre beans and rice. My wife liked her el pastor just ok. She added some salt. This place has promise, but I'm not sure if it will make it without being able to have a Mexican beer. I didn't ask if you could BYOB, but I'd be interested.

Foods were amazing! But service is slow so just make sure you’ve got some time. It seems like it’s run by a very nice family but just a one man show on the server front. Amazing marinations on their meat though!

Our second time here and both were memorable. The staff is friendly, the food delicious, and the prices reasonable. Their salsa is the best I've had at any Mexican restaurant. Be sure to enjoy it yourself.

El Rincon Chiapaneco Mexican Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Johns Island, South Carolina, offers a genuine taste of authentic Mexican cuisine that feels like a true culinary escape. From the moment you walk in, the warm, festive decor and the friendly atmosphere set the stage for a memorable dining experience. This family-run gem prides itself on fresh, homemade dishes that bring the rich flavors of Mexico to life, far surpassing the usual chain fare.

What truly stands out here are the meticulously crafted, scratch-made tortillas and the vibrant house salsa, which strikes just the right balance of heat and freshness. The menu, though elegantly simple, covers essential Mexican favorites with precision and passion. Highlights include the chicken mole, a complex dish layered with spice and depth, and the tender carne asada quesadilla, packed with juicy beef chunks and perfectly melted cheese. The chicken empanadas are a revelation — crispy, flavorful, and clearly made with care — and the el pastor burrito offers a satisfying blend of savory meat paired with a well-composed salad and rice.

El Rincon has earned its place as a local favorite not only for its food but for the recently added full bar that elevates the meal experience. Enjoying a refreshing melon agua fresca or a large, albeit slightly pricey, house margarita complements the food perfectly. Cold Mexican beers and tequila sodas, now available, offer an authentic beverage pairing that many patrons had longed for.

The service reflects the intimate, family-oriented nature of the restaurant — warm and genuine, though occasionally a bit slow, suggesting the kitchen and front-of-house teams juggle multiple roles with dedication. Despite this, the care put into every dish shines through and makes the wait worthwhile.

El Rincon Chiapaneco Mexican Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a slice of Mexican heritage brought to life on the Carolina coast. For those seeking authentic, fresh Mexican delights paired with a lively, inviting atmosphere, this spot is a must-try. I look forward to many more visits to savor their humble yet vibrant offerings and support this local culinary treasure.
